The AF-23 series is an external shaft-clamping arrangement for connecting disc-shaped attachments without backlash. It offers A, AB, C and BC constructions and a catalog range extending from nominal AF-50 to AF-440. Each shaft alternative must be selected with its own listed torque, dimensions and fastener specification.

Direct clamping and assembly principle
AF-12, AF-22 and AF-23 consist of a conical pressure ring and a conical inner ring. Tightening the screws pulls the pressure ring axially onto the inner ring, reducing the inner diameter and creating radial pressure directly on the shaft. The resulting frictional connection secures the attachment without backlash. The small cone angle requires push-off threads in the inner ring for the documented release procedure.
Load path and the connecting screws
The adapter flange is part of the load path: forces pass between the attachment, the external clamping element and the shaft. This differs from a separate shrink disc that only supplies clamping force to a shaft-hub interface. For an adapter flange, the attachment screws have a significant influence on the torque that can be transmitted. Check the screw connection and the clamping interface together, including the actual material and contact conditions.
Four construction options
| Design | Thread location | Centering feature |
|---|---|---|
| A | Outer pressure ring | Without the additional centering arrangement |
| AB | Outer pressure ring | With centering |
| C | Attachment / mounting part | Without the additional centering arrangement |
| BC | Attachment / mounting part | With centering |
Choose the thread location according to the attachment and the available screw access. AB and BC include the centering arrangement, so their centering diameter and length must match the counterpart. The four options are construction choices within this series and must be identified in the complete order code.
Complete catalog size and torque table
Within each row, the shaft-diameter options and torque values correspond in the same left-to-right order. Keep each pair together. The dimensional, screw and weight data alongside them belong to the nominal type shown in that row. Decimal commas have been written as decimal points. The table reproduces catalog entries and does not assign one maximum torque to every available bore.

Selecting the correct shaft alternative
The AF-260 row lists 232,000 Nm for a 260 mm shaft and 234,000 Nm for the 250 and 240 mm alternatives. These values are preserved as printed rather than replaced with an assumed progression. Confirm the selected catalog variant and final application drawing when specifying this nominal type.
Fits, attachment thickness and screw details
| Item | Catalog requirement / recommendation |
|---|---|
| Shaft fit up to d_w = 150 mm | H7/h6 |
| Shaft fit from d_w = 155 mm | H7/g6 |
| Centering fit up to d = 150 mm | H7/h6 |
| Centering fit from d = 155 mm | H7/g6 |
| Attachment thickness b | Greater than 1.4 times the screw diameter |
| Washers | With washers from screw size M10 |
| Pressure-ring finish | Catalog distinction: d < 125 mm lightly oiled; d ≥ 125 mm painted |
The fit recommendations are shown for the diameter intervals stated in the catalog. If the required diameter or tolerance differs, confirm it for the application rather than filling a gap by assumption. Attachment thickness b belongs to the mounted component, while H and l identify dimensions of the external clamping arrangement. The table screw class is 10.9; preserve the specified size, class and washer arrangement.
Dimension and torque terminology
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Type | Nominal type within the selected AF series |
| d_w | Shaft diameter |
| M_t,max | Maximum transmittable torque for the listed configuration |
| D / l / H | Outer diameter / bush length / external-element width |
| A | Screw pitch-circle diameter |
| C / d | Centering length / centering diameter |
| B | Attachment size shown in the drawing |
| Z / S / M_A | Screw quantity / screw size / required tightening torque |
Assembly and disassembly
The AF construction has a defined displacement. Complete the prescribed assembly travel using the procedure for the selected type; do not replace that criterion with the installation process of a different clamping family. The catalog still lists required screw data and tightening values, which belong to the specified assembly. Push-off threads provide the release arrangement for the small-angle conical components, so retain access for disassembly when positioning the attachment.
Ordering code
The catalog example AF-60-23-60 A identifies nominal type AF-60, series 23, a 60 mm shaft and design A. The series number is essential because series 12, 22 and 23 can use similar nominal type names while having different dimensions and ratings. The AF-23 table below is the basis for its stated torque range, which extends beyond the general adapter-flange webpage overview.
Applications and selection
Typical applications include marine equipment, conveying drives, mixing and process machinery and hydropower installations. Disc-shaped attachments such as brake discs and pulleys are connected directly to the shaft. Where technically suitable, this can provide a compact alternative to a complete FK or FKB flange coupling. Brake-disc applications also require the braking duty and attachment interface to be assessed separately from the shaft-clamping torque table.
Ordering information
Specify the series, nominal type, shaft diameter, A/AB/C/BC design, attachment geometry, shaft tolerance, materials, speed and load spectrum. Include the available installation space, screw access, release access, surface requirements and any environmental protection. Check the approved dimensional drawing and the installation procedure for the exact configuration before finalizing the connection.
